In the early days of my journey to take a break from the booze I was white knuckling it. Every day was a struggle to not drink. My mind was consumed by it: “Don’t drink tonight. Don’t go to the store and buy a bottle. Don’t go the cocktail club in the building where I live. Don’t drink. Don’t drink. Don’t drink.”
Today, more than a year-and-a-half without the booze, my life is exponentially better than the day I started down this journey. Major challenges and incredible stress have come my way and I have faced every one of them in a manner that makes me proud of the person I’m becoming.
Take a look and a listen to daily advertisements that saturate our subconscious. The advertisement industry tells us that alcohol is the secret ticket to feeling happy, sexy, connected and prosperous. What I have come to discover is that regular and/or over consumption of alcohol is a total and complete thief to living one’s best life.
The fact is that alcohol is one of the top five most addictive substances on the planet, right up there with heroin and cocaine. It attacks our brain, immune system, bones and organs. It’s proven through research that alcohol is involved in a high number of domestic violence disputes. And I recently read an alarming statistic that between 30 and 40 percent of reported sexual assaults, including rapes, are committed by a perpetrator under the influence of alcohol. Not to mention that a myriad of illnesses are linked to the consumption of booze. I could go on and on, but one only needs to do their own research to discover the reality.
If you are thinking about taking a break from alcohol or if you have found yourself drinking more than you want to, I’m here to tell you that the hard, hard work is worth it (and yes, going booze free is super hard). In my own life, here’s just a short list of how I’m such a better version of myself:
- My financial health has skyrocketed. Miraculously so.
- I sleep much better and rise up earlier in the morning.
- I now meditate daily and have a soul-stirring morning routine that starts every one of my days off right.
- My judgement and thinking are clear and strong.
- I have processed past challenges, memories and repressed negative emotions I’d held onto for years. You see, drinking (and hangovers) distract us from facing what we don’t want to face. This inner work has probably been the hardest part of my alcohol-free journey, but certainly the most liberating.
- I am much more attuned to my emotional, physical and spiritual needs.
- Happiness and contentment are now woven into my soul in a way that I haven’t felt in decades,maybe ever.
- I am much, much closer to God.
I could go on and on, but will stop the gushing about my new life. The point I deeply want to make is that all of these great things are available for you too. If I can do this, you can do this. It’s possible.
